A Starters Guide To Journaling - 3 Prompts To Kick Off Your New Mindful Self Love Practice
In my experience there are a ton of different approaches to journaling – and there is really no right or wrong. If you are are keen to try it out to become more mindful, then the below 3 prompts could be a good start for you.
They build up on each other so you can just go with the first one for a few days and then add in the second and once you are more comfortable with the flow of things and feel like you’ve got a hang of things you can move on and add the 3rd one too. It’s a daily practice for the end of day, to just take 5 minutes out of your evening before bed or once the kids are asleep. When you have a quiet moment and are able to think uninterrupted for a few minutes.
This is meant to be a positive exercise, not a competition or comparison. You want to shift into a positive mindset over time, and not beat yourself up for finding this difficult. And yes, it can be difficult to start with but it will be easier after a few days, I promise.
You matter. Remember that.
This journaling practice is built around “Was there something beautiful this week?” It can be anything you saw, heard, witnessed, felt this week? Can you remember?
A lot of people don’t really capture this kind of moment. They aren’t mindful of the beautiful little moments. They don’t train their minds to look out for these moments and appreciate them.
Here are the 3 prompts that will help you become more mindful and grateful:
What are the 5 beautiful things or moments you noticed today?
A nice song that came on the radio, that evoked emotions. The kids playing nicely with each other. A coworker supporting a project. A colourful sunset, nature, animals. Outstanding architecture, art, landscapes.
If you journal, you also learn to look at life more closely. You notice something others wouldn’t. Your focus is narrowed and you capture little scenes of life like snapshots.
By noticing more beauty around you, you practise gratitude as well as more intentional self awareness.
Taking it to the next step of more intentionalism, you can then move on to asking yourself the next question:
What did you do today or this week to create a beautiful moment?
This moves you from a consumer to a creator. You generate your own reality. You make the difference.
If you are struggling with coming up with anything, then you might want to reshuffle your priorities. Manifest, create, architect your own life.
What beautiful moments do you intend to create next week?
For yourself, your family, your business?
Going through those 3 journaling prompts on a daily or weekly basis is a great start to bring more awareness, mindfulness, intention and autonomy into your life. In turn, this will start building up your happiness levels as you feel more in charge of your life again. The more you journal, the more you reflect, the more authentic and happy you will feel.
Be patient with everyone, but above all with yourself.
It’s the key to a more fulfilled life and a growth-focussed mindset.
What do you think about these prompts – and which ones do you love to use for your journaling practice? Do you prefer to freestyle or do you use a journaling book or app? Personally I have both Brandon Burchard’s growthday app which I use for daily and weekly journaling, as well as Dean Graziosi’s Better Life Journal. I like to shift between journaling digitally and pen/ paper, depending on my mood and the moment of my day I carve out for my practice.
